SMA | New Year, New Cleanliness Rules

As many of you have heard from our latest live stream, we will be bringing a new team member on board at the academy! Sarah Miller will be Spectrum's new professional cleaner! We are excited to have Sarah join the team!

However, we have one more update that we would like to make. Starting this week, all students will be required to keep their shoes (whether normal shoes or specific footwear just for the academy) on the edge of the mat (i.e. on the laminate with toes facing the edge of the mat). We ask that students make this change to make it easier for all students (kids and adults) to slip their shoes on and off because...

All students must wear some type of footwear if they are not on the mat.

This includes the laminate, carpet, and especially the restrooms and outside. To put it simply, if a student steps off the mat, they must have some type of footwear under their feet. To help make this easier, we ask that all students do not place their shoes in the cubbies (which will still be used for all other gear like bags, jackets, etc) and instead place their shoes on the edge of the mat. Water bottles and mouth guards may also be placed by the student's shoes provided that they are in secure containers and labeled with the student's name. If students need to use the water fountain, they must put their footwear on first before stepping off the mat.

Obviously, flip flops or slides would be the easiest to use with this new change, but due to the weather they are not necessary. However, we do recommend that students simply get a pair of flip flops they can use solely at the academy and throw them in their bag when they're done. To provide additional convenience, there will be several pairs of academy flip flops available for students who, for whatever reason, are not able to have footwear when they step off the mat. These flip flops will be labeled and will remain at the academy and on the edge of the mat at all times.

Please understand that this is a mandatory change and we will be cracking down on individuals who break this rule. Refer to our code of conduct located in our academy which already states that students must wear shoes when going to the restroom. This new rule simply takes that rule and applies it to the whole academy. We use these rules to help keep our mats clean and our students healthy. 

Parents and students, please help us put this new change into effect! We will be making public announcements in every class, but feel free to start placing your or your child's shoes on the mat edge starting today. 

TL;DR: You're not allowed to be barefoot in the academy unless you're on the mat. Keep your shoes by the mat so you can slip them on when you need to step off the mat.

Remember that we have wet wipes for your feet as well! They are located next to the smaller bathroom!
